Description

Purpose of Position:  While working cooperatively with the Pastor, Parish Director, Building Services Director, parish leaders, and other staff members to provide for an efficient, safe and effective pastoral environment in keeping with the mission of Pax Christi.

The purpose of this position is to maintain the physical appearance and security of the entire campus at Pax Christi (indoors and outdoors).  The Building Services Team are responsible for the maintenance and custodial needs of the campus facilities. This includes regular cleaning and routine maintenance, set up and take down for campus events, and ensuring the safety and security of our campus. This position requires the ability to work nights and weekends.

General Accountabilities: Employment in and by Pax Christi is substantially different from secular employment. Church employees must conduct themselves in a manner which is consistent with and supportive of the mission and purpose of the Catholic Church. Their public behavior must not violate the faith, morals or laws of the Church or the Archdiocese, such that can embarrass the Church or give rise to scandal. Adherence to confidentiality is required in all matters pertaining to members’ personal information. This position does not require that this employee be a Roman Catholic. It is expected that all employees respect Catholic doctrine and religious practices. Reasonable accommodation for the religious practice of employees not of the Roman Catholic faith will similarly be provided.

Representative Responsibilities:

  1. Be present and prepared to work on scheduled days.
  2. Provide janitorial care of the facility/grounds this includes Offices, Corridors Entryways, Restrooms, and Worship and Meeting Spaces.  Along with outdoor spaces, i.e. snow removal & yard work. If hazards arise, i.e. slips, trips and falls, those are to be addressed immediately.
  3. Check to see that the people using the spaces have what they need for successful meetings or gatherings.
  4. Fix any minor repairs and report any major repairs to the Building Services Director.
  5. Provide a secure environment for meetings for members, visitors and staff (monitor the behavior of visitors and challenge suspicious activity and call the Building Services Director to report what is happening.
  6. Provide initial response and assistance when a medical incident occurs and ensure that emergency response (911) has been requested.
  7. Unlocking the building when opening. Disarming the alarm, unlocking the proper doors for the meeting that are happening, and walking the building to ensure everything is safe.
  8. Properly lock up the building when it is closed. This includes turning off all lights, locking all interior and exterior doors and checking all bathrooms to ensure they are empty. When the building is secure, set the alarm.

Qualifications

Education:

Knowledgeable of requirements for handling hazardous materials including blood borne pathogens.

Familiar with Right to Know requirements.

Background Check:

Successful completion of background check is required along with Virtus training.  Signed archdiocesan Code of Conduct must be on file.

Skill Dimensions:

Know when to call for help.

Effective listening skills and ability to translate written and verbal work orders into practical activities.

Mental and Physical Demands:

  • The key to this role is being able to determine what needs attention and meet the demands of the moment.
  • Supportive of other staff members.
  • Able to respond decisively in chaotic situations and maintain good interpersonal relations at times of crisis.
  • Able to develop and maintain productive relations with volunteers.
  • Able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds, using proper techniques, along with the ability to use equipment necessary for the position.
  • Pass a pre-employment physical.

Quantitative Dimensions:

  • The interior square footage included is 94,000 square feet and the grounds cover 25 acres including parking lots, an outdoor shrine and nature walks.
  • The building is 90% carpeted and meeting rooms vary from 10 to 400 people. The sanctuary seats 1400 including overflow.
  • There are 30 to 50 set-ups per week.
