Description
The Facilities Custodian ensures the cleanliness, maintenance, and security of parish and school facilities, supporting the mission of St. Jude of the Lake Catholic Church. This position involves custodial duties, preventative maintenance, and event setup and takedown, while providing a welcoming and safe environment for parishioners, students, staff, and visitors.
General Responsibilities
Employment in and by the Church is distinct from secular employment. Church employees are expected to conduct themselves in a manner consistent with the mission and purpose of the Church. Public behavior must align with Church teachings, morals, and laws, as well as those of the Archdiocese, to avoid causing scandal or embarrassment. Employees are required to respect Catholic doctrine and practices.
Key Responsibilities
Facilities Maintenance
- Conduct routine property inspections to identify and address maintenance needs.
- Perform general maintenance tasks, including painting, cleaning, plumbing, and minor electrical work.
- Repair or replace faulty equipment and components.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment, ensuring all areas meet safety and hygiene standards.
- Perform daily walkthroughs to ensure building security and address maintenance issues.
- Coordinate preventative maintenance checks and schedules for equipment and facilities.
- Assist with renovations and improvement projects as needed.
- Perform routine maintenance
- Assist with event setup and takedown.
Grounds
- Maintain grounds, including snow removal and lawn care.
Custodial Duties
- Clean classrooms, offices, restrooms, and common areas to maintain a welcoming and professional environment.
- Perform daily trash collection and recycling, ensuring proper disposal procedures.
- Handle outdoor maintenance, including lawn care, landscaping, and snow removal, based on seasonal requirements.
- Respond promptly to maintenance requests, ensuring minimal disruption to parish and school operations.
Event Support
- Set up and take down furniture and equipment for parish and school events.
- Assist with logistics and on-site needs during large parish functions.
Vendor Coordination
- Collaborate with contractors and vendors to address facility needs and ensure timely task completion.
- Manage follow-ups on critical repairs and preventative maintenance tasks.
Safety and Compliance
- Report safety hazards and maintenance concerns to the Facilities Care Coordinator.
- Adhere to Archdiocesan and parish policies, ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
- Participate in annual training sessions and ensure proper use of equipment and materials.
Schedule:
- Hiring for either a morning or afternoon/evening shift based on applicant availability and operational needs.
- Summer scheduling may allow for daytime hours due to seasonal building usage and project work.
- Opportunity for additional evening and weekend hours based on parish, school, and event needs.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of 2 years of custodial or maintenance experience preferred.
Skills and Abilities:
- Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems.
- Familiarity with maintenance tools and equipment.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact with staff, parishioners, and vendors.
Physical and Mental Demands
- Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds regularly.
- Frequent bending, kneeling, and climbing ladders.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and on uneven surfaces.
- Maintain professionalism in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
