FLSA: Non-Exempt (hourly)

Schedule: 20-29 hours per week.  The nature of the work and the Church’s schedule of activities requires scheduling flexibility, and the employee will work with the supervisor to arrange a schedule that meets the needs of both the Parish and the individual.

Purpose: A custodian at Saint John the Baptist Church and School (SJB) is responsible for day-to-day custodial and maintenance needs for the facilities.  They are responsible for the care and cleaning of the building.

Statement for working for the Catholic Church: Employment in and by the Church is substantially different from secular employment. Church employees must conduct themselves in a manner consistent with and supportive of the mission and purpose of the Church. Their public behavior must not violate the faith, morals or laws of the Church or the Archdiocese, such that it can embarrass the Church or give rise to scandal. This position does not require that the employee be a Catholic. It is expected that all employees respect Catholic doctrine and religious practices. All employees will be required to complete and maintain the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis Enhanced Essential Three, set forth by the Office of Ministerial Standards and Safe Environment (http://safe-environment.archspm.org/essential-3/), as a condition of employment.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES (*):

  1. To be present, on time, and ready for work at all times that the position requires.

  2. To participate in creating a productive, harmonious environment, promoting good morale, adequate communication and cooperative teamwork within the staff and parish community.

  3. Perform the job in a manner consistent with the moral, ethical, legal, and financial standards of civil and canon law, and Catholic Church teaching.

  4. Be informed of all mandatory Church, Archdiocesan, Federal, and State laws and policies that impact moral and ethical personnel standards (e.g., staff and volunteer background checks, treatment of vulnerable adults and youth, child protection reporting requirements, sexual harassment/misconduct, insurance liabilities, etc.).  Ensure compliance with these laws and policies in all programs.

  5. Maintain professional standards of confidentiality.

CUSTODIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Responsible for the cleanliness of buildings, ensuring a safe and sanitary environment.

  2. Duties typically include cleaning and disinfecting surfaces, emptying trash receptacles, sweeping and mopping floors, and restocking supplies

  3. Regular cleaning of the Church, gathering space, and school, following the schedule as needed.

  4. Keep bathrooms fully stocked with appropriate supplies. Keep cleaning supplies well-stocked and in assigned areas.

  5. Promptly responding to facility, staff, and parishioner needs. Report any major maintenance problems to the Director of Operations

  6. Assist with set-up for events or activities and occasionally monitor and address safety hazards.

  7. Maintain equipment in clean and good working condition so it is always ready for use when needed.

  8. Provide custodial assistance to other areas within the Parish and school as needed and assume responsibilities as assigned.

  9. Provide basic maintenance assistance in the Parish and school when needed.

Other responsibilities: Includes other responsibilities identified as needed by the employee and approved and /or assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

Qualifications & Requirements of Position:

  • Basic knowledge of cleaning methods is needed to complete tasks.

  • Basic knowledge of building maintenance and repairs.

  • Ability to learn new procedures and understanding of the job description.

Mental Demands:

  • Respect the confidentiality of the staff and co-workers.

  • Communicate with the Director of Facilities and all other staff members in all matters concerning maintenance.

  • Solve a variety of problems as they arise in day-to-day situations.

  • Keep track of dates and times of schedules.

  • Ability to work under pressure and troubleshoot.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to work 40 hours per week and availability in emergency situations.

  • Ability to safely lift and move 40 pounds using proper lifting methods.

  • Perform the job in all outdoor/indoor temperatures and weather conditions.

  • Walk, stand, and sit for extended periods.

  • Reach, bend, kneel, squat, and stoop while performing tasks.
