Description

The primary purpose of this position is to support our parish mission by leading in discipleship families and youth engaging in our sacramental programs of Baptism, First Sacraments, Order of Christian Initiation of Children and Marriage Preparation.  Position supports parents in the sacramental preparation as well as leads the Parent Program for Formation and ministry programs and supporting discipleship of families through evangelization events.

Representative Responsibilities

  1. *Work collaboratively with both staff and volunteers in a Core Team model to implement youth discipleship programming.
  2. *Coordinate parish outreach events, trainings, and programming for parents and youth in the parish community, such as coordinating speakers, trainers, facility needs, meals, supplies, etc.
  3. *Recruit, train, and supervise all adult and teen leaders in a Core Team model, to lead Baptism Class Facilitators, First Sacraments Catechists, Parent Program Core Team, OCIC grades 2-5 (if needed) and Marriage Mentor Couples. Ensure these leaders have adequate knowledge of faith and catechetical skills as well as training in pastoral practice.
  4. *Maintain effective and appropriate working relationships with all youth, parents, parish staff, volunteers, and parishioners.
  5. *Handle conflicts, challenges, crisis situations, and behavior issues with maturity by providing pastoral care, mentoring and wisdom to both adults and youth. Making the necessary referrals and follow up according to safe environment policies.
  6. *Be an active member of the St. John’s church community by being present and attend weekend Masses regularly as well as school and church events of high visibility such as Fall Fest, Wines to Wishes and St. John’s Feast Day. It is of high importance that the incumbent in this position knows and is known by parishioners. Lead First Eucharist celebrations.
  7. *Be present and attend Church and SJB school in order to build relationships with parents and families especially Fall Fest, Catechetical Sunday, Wines to Wishes and parish feast days.
  8. *Collaborate with staff and assist Coordinator of Discipleship for Families in large parish events like All Saints Party, Journey to the Inn, Egg Hunt and Parish Feast Day.
  9. *Meet regularly with supervisor and team members. Attend ODM, parish staff and all staff meetings. Attend Archdiocesan events and networking opportunities within your area of ministry for ongoing development and support.
  10. *Clearly communicate to teens, families, and the wider parish community all that happens within your program areas; from promoting events to telling the glory stories. Using Flocknote, Father’s email, bulletin, and social media outlets.
  11. *Handle administrative tasks to effectively and efficiently execute programs, retreats, events, and activities such as program schedules, weekly communication emails, permission forms, etc.
  12. *Maintain databases and record discipleship efforts as well as update and evaluate effectiveness of ministry components.
  13. *Assure adherence to all Safe Environment rules, guidelines, and requirements from the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, such as permission forms for offsite events, driver requirements, student curriculum, etc.

Ministries

  1. *Implement goals and objectives of the Baptism
    1. Recruit, train, schedule and provide enrichment for Baptism Facilitator Couples to teach the monthly baptism class.
    2. Recruit, train and provide enrichment for Baptism Celebration Assistants.
    3. Oversee baptism process and give work direction to Administrative Assistant regarding baptisms ensuring process from intake to sacramental recording and outreach into future ministry.
    4. Provide parent/child baptism orientation sessions for children ages 3-7 toward celebration.
    5. Oversee Baptism Sewing volunteers.
  2. *Implement goals and objectives of the First Sacraments program.
    1. Coordinate the First Sacraments program for children in grade 2 or older working with Family Formation catechist team and Grade 2 schoolteachers on lesson implementation.
    2. Lead parents and their children in the preparation process of the program including home lesson orientation/encouragement, retreat opportunities, practices, and celebrations.
    3. Recruit, train, and supervise catechists and volunteers as needed. Ensure adequate knowledge of faith, catechetical skills, and classroom management. Provide monthly training for effective ministry for catechists.  Provide quarterly meetings with grade 2 schoolteachers. Assist grade 2 teachers with monthly classroom lesson to school children.
    4. Engage inactive parents.
  3. *Coordinate Parent Ministry.
    1. Consult with Parent Core Team to execute the Parent Program on Formation Nights.
    2. Secure speakers and implement plan for Program Nights and Catechist In Services.
    3. Collaborate with Hospitality Coordinator the monthly Formation meal.
    4. Coordinate home lesson compilation, orientate families and follow up with families on lessons.
    5. Collaborate with school staff to implement All in God’s Plan for parents and youth.
    6. Bridge discipleship of parents into active ministry especially with small group participation.
    7. Coordinate two Formation Sunday Masses for families in Formation programs.
  4. * Implement goals and objectives of the Order of Christian Initiation of Children program for grades 2-5.
    1. Oversee initial inquiries and meet with families.  Guide families through the process.
    2. Oversee and lead meetings and provide retreats, practices and celebrations.
    3. Collaborate with Coordinator of Sacraments in bridging ministry from baptism to First Sacraments.
  5. *Implement goals and objectives of the Marriage Preparation Ministry.
    1. Oversee entire process from Intake to Formation to Liturgy to post marriage formation opportunities.
    2. Recruit, train and supervise Wedding Coordinators.
    3. Minister to the needs of the couples with collaborating with staff for their needs.
  6. *Implement goals and objectives for parent ministries.
    1. Coordinate a Divorce Ministry program for parishioners.
    2. Staff Liaison for Health Care Ministry.
  7. *Implement goals and objectives and lead Totus Tuus day program.
  8. Assist Coordinator of Discipleship for Families with summer programming of Vacation Bible School.
  9. Assist Coordinator of Discipleship for Families with large parish events like All Saints Party, Journey to the Inn, Egg Hunt and Parish Feast Day.
  10. Assist Coordinator of Discipleship for Families with nursery care.

*To be present where needed, ready to work as needed to meet responsibilities.  Includes recognizing when situations require more effort, satisfying responsibilities in a timely manner, providing an example of punctuality and attendance, and generally ensuring all is ready and taken care of.

*Organize, prepare and maintain files and information. Gather information from fax, email and other sources, ensure all information has been received, follow up as necessary, organize reports and make them available for convenient reference, maintain for the designated time, discard at designated time.

*Maintain and improve work knowledge and skills such as understanding requirements and work procedures, purpose of work completed and computer and projector use.

*Meet all communication requirements including interpersonal skills with parish and school employees as well as visitors, guests, school families, and parishioners.  Includes keeping superiors and appropriate others informed.

*Help create a productive environment where there is harmony, good morale, and cooperative teamwork.  Monitor self-productivity and take corrective action as appropriate.

Qualifications

  1. Must be a practicing Catholic with a sound understanding of Catholic practice, Tradition and Scripture.
  2. Demonstrate understanding and acceptance of Catholic doctrine.
  3. Experience and education in sacraments and sacramental preparation.
  4. Bachelor’s degree in ministry, education or equivalent.
  5. Demonstrated skills and interests in this type of work.
  6. Experience in communications – email, newsletter, etc.
  7. Strong computer, keyboarding and 10-key skills
  8. Proficiency in technology: Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), ParishSoft database, Flocknote, others.
  9. Strong writing skills; proficiency in grammatical skills.
  10. Must be able to pass background check.
