Description
The Children’s Christmas Choir Director is responsible for recruiting, rehearsing, and leading a children's choir (grades 2 through 8) for a Christmas Eve Mass, traditionally at 4pm in the main sanctuary. This role focuses on teaching foundational vocal skills, building self-confidence, and fostering a joyful, engaging holiday music experience.
Musical Leadership & Instruction
- Rehearsal Planning: Plan and lead weekly or periodic rehearsals leading up to the Christmas Eve Mass, typically one day a week after school starting mid-October until Christmas Eve.
- Vocal & Musical Training: Teach age-appropriate vocal techniques (breath control, diction, pitch matching) and basic music reading or rhythm.
- Repertoire Selection: Choose engaging, age-appropriate, and festive musical selections suited to the children's skill levels.
- Accompaniment Collaboration: Work closely with pianists, organists, and/or instrumentalists for rehearsals and final performance.
Performance & Event Coordination
- Seasonal Performance: Direct the choir during Christmas Eve Mass.
- Stage Presence & Blocking: Coordinate simple choreography, staging, and positioning to help young performers feel comfortable and look organized.
- Dress Rehearsal: Organize and run final rehearsal with sound, lighting, and instrumental accompaniment.
Communication & Administration
- Parent Communication: Send regular, clear updates regarding rehearsal schedules, attire, attendance expectations, and performance logistics.
- Safe Environment: Supervise children during practices and performances, maintaining a secure, inclusive, and positive environment.
- Collaboration: Partner with pastoral, worship arts, or children’s ministry staff to align the choir's schedule with overall holiday service themes
Time Commitment & Logistics
- Schedule: Seasonal (Typically October through December).
- Weekly Hours: 2 hours per week with additional hours the week of the Christmas Eve Mass (includes rehearsals and administrative planning)
Qualifications
BA degree in sacred music and/or liturgical related field
- Directing and conducting skills.
- Knowledge of scripture
- Knowledge and understanding of Canon Law
- Computer and keyboarding skills.
- Must be able to pass a background check.
