Description
The accompanist plays an invaluable role in our liturgies, supporting both congregational singing and the choir.
Under the guidance of the Director of Music and Liturgy, the accompanist provides beautiful and skilled musical accompaniment both during liturgies and rehearsals. The Church of the Annunciation places a high value on
quality music at liturgies.
The accompanist will be joining a vibrant music ministry. This music program has a 70/30 split of organ/piano rep for congregational singing. Proficiency in both organ and
piano is required, and the ability to improvise is highly desired. The Director of Music and Liturgy is also an organist accompanist and can provide support, fill in, and
collaboration. This person will have first right of refusal for weddings and funerals. We do have other part-time accompanists who can also support weddings and funerals, if
needed, providing added flexibility to this role, should a candidate’s availability for funerals or weddings be limited.
We have a well-maintained 30-Rank 1962 Wicks pipe organ, which is operated by a four manual Rodgers Infinity four (4) manual console with additional digital voicing.
Annunciation has amazing acoustics and a fun environment for organ music. We have a Yamaha grand piano in the sanctuary loft.
Expectations:
Provide skilled accompaniment to the choir and congregation at regularly scheduled liturgies, holy days, and other solemnities; this role will have first right of refusal for funerals and weddings. We also perform two sacred music concerts per year. Organ concerts are also of interest, should the selected candidate be willing and able.
Understanding of Catholic liturgy is desired, though a base knowledge and a willingness to learn is also acceptable for the right candidate.
Provide flexible organ and piano accompaniment at regularly scheduled choir rehearsals.
Prepare music in advance, including hymns, choral accompaniments, preludes and postludes.
Maintain a professional, cooperative, and flexible working relationship with church staff and volunteers.
Ensure respectful care and proper use of church instruments.
Collaborate with Director of Music to enhance the beauty of liturgies
Mass Schedule is currently 5PM Saturday and 9:30AM Sundays, with call times 45 minutes prior to mass, or as needed.
Rehearsals are Wednesdays at 7pm during the choral season (September – Corpus Christi).
Weekly hours to fluctuate depending on liturgical season (e.g., Christmas, Holy Week, etc.).
Summer mass times remain the same, with no choir rehearsals and cantor only at masses.

- Organ and piano proficiency, with experience in Catholic liturgy preferred, but experience in non-Catholic liturgical traditions will be considered.
- Experience working with choirs and collaborating with cantors
- Ability to sight-read music
- Flexibility and adaptivity
- Strong collaborative and communication skills
