Position Summary
Assumption Catholic Church is seeking a dependable, experienced Facilities Director to oversee the maintenance, cleanliness, safety, and overall care of our parish buildings and grounds.
This position is responsible for ensuring that our facilities are clean, safe, well-maintained, and prepared for meetings, events, liturgies, and activities throughout the parish. The Facilities Director supervises maintenance staff, coordinates service contracts and maintenance needs, assists with daytime security, and works closely with parish leadership and staff to ensure the parish campus is welcoming, functional, and well cared for.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on, organized, self-motivated professional who takes pride in maintaining a property, can work independently, and works well as part of a team.
Essential Responsibilities
Facilities & General Maintenance
- Oversee the general maintenance and upkeep of parish buildings and facilities.
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs, including painting and other building-related projects.
- Oversee operation and maintenance of boilers, heating and cooling systems, and other building equipment as qualified.
- Monitor service contracts and maintenance agreements for elevators, fire extinguishers, mechanical systems, security systems and other facility needs.
- Help create and implement a comprehensive plan to keep parish buildings and grounds in good repair and condition.
- Use equipment safely and maintain equipment in fully operational condition.
Grounds & Property
- Maintain and monitor parish grounds, parking lots, sidewalks, and entrances.
- Monitor parking lot and sidewalk conditions and address maintenance needs.
- Maintain a clean and welcoming campus.
- Water grounds as needed.
- Oversee and ensure prompt removal of snow and ice from sidewalks and steps.
- Assist people attending Assumption events with parking and address unauthorized parking in a polite and firm manner.
Cleaning & Housekeeping
- Oversee daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning tasks on a scheduled basis.
- Ensure church and parish spaces are clean, orderly, and ready for use.
- Vacuum, sweep, mop, dust, and clean bathrooms, kitchen areas, and other parish spaces as needed.
- Order and maintain appropriate maintenance and cleaning supplies.
- Ensure daily trash and recycling schedules are followed throughout the facility.
Meetings & Events
- Prepare rooms for meetings, events, and parish activities.
- Ensure rooms are clean and appropriately arranged.
- Arrange and move furniture as necessary.
- When present, respond to additional meeting setup requirements requested by meeting participants.
Security & Building Access
- Unlock and lock the church according to the daily schedule.
- Be aware of people on parish property and ensure they are in the building for a valid reason.
- Take appropriate security actions required to maintain safety and order.
- Assist with daytime security and monitor parish property.
Supervision & Teamwork
- Supervise and provide work direction to maintenance staff.
- Help create a productive environment characterized by harmony, good morale, and cooperative teamwork.
- Monitor productivity and take corrective action as appropriate.
- Maintain effective communication with employees, parishioners, vendors, supervisors, and other appropriate individuals.
- Keep supervisors and appropriate others informed of facility, maintenance, security, and staffing concerns.
- Demonstrate dependable attendance, punctuality, initiative, and a willingness to provide additional effort when needed.
- Maintain and improve knowledge and skills related to building maintenance, boiler operation, custodial work, equipment, and work procedures.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of property management or related facilities/maintenance experience.
- Previous supervisory experience.
- Boiler license.
- Demonstrated skills and interest in facilities maintenance, property care, and related work.
- Proficiency with common office and communication tools, including email, word processing, and related parish systems.
- Ability to complete and maintain required background checks, Safe Environment training, and Archdiocesan compliance requirements.
Mental Demands
- Knowledge of cleaning materials and chemicals and the safe use of all materials.
- Knowledge of safe operating procedures and maintenance of cleaning machines, such as vacuums and floor cleaners.
- Ability to follow supervisor instructions and work independently on routine and regular assignments.
- Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to work well with others.
- Ability to maintain a positive and helpful attitude, even during difficult and stressful situations.

Physical Demands
- Ability to work 40 hours per week.
- Ability to lift and move items weighing up to 40 pounds, using proper techniques.
- Ability to climb stairs.
- Ability to perform physical tasks and maintain the stamina necessary for an active workday.
- Ability to perform routine maintenance, cleaning, room setup, grounds maintenance, and other physical duties associated with the position.
Work Environment
This is a hands-on facilities position requiring regular interaction with parish staff, parishioners, volunteers, vendors, and visitors. The Facilities Director is expected to remain professional, helpful, and respectful when handling difficult or stressful situations.
Employment in and by the Church is substantially different from secular employment. Church employees must conduct themselves in a manner consistent with and supportive of the mission and purpose of the Church. Their behavior must not violate the faith, morals, or laws of the Church or the Archdiocese in a manner that could embarrass the Church or give rise to scandal.
