Description
POSITION: Nurse (Sonography experience a plus)
Regular, non-exempt, part-time position (1-3 days per week, FT also an option)
POSITION SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager and in cooperation and coordination with the Executive Director, the Nurse provides medical services at SouthWest Options for Women (SWOW); performs direct and indirect nursing interventions; and serves as a Patient Advocate (including lay counseling and pregnancy and STI testing, when requested by patient).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Support patients utilizing the most current factual information, strive to always to serve as well as to become more proficient in the following areas;
- Basic pregnancy related issues
- Options education
- Contraceptives and fertility awareness
- *Ability to perform limited ultrasounds.
- Post-abortion support or referrals
- Under the direction of the Medical Director and Nurse Manager:
- Perform pregnancy tests, STI testing, limited obstetrical ultrasounds, prenatal education, making assessments, documenting all required information, providing education and appropriate resources.
- Implement established infection control policies and procedures.
- Keep medical exam rooms, lab areas, and medical equipment clean and in good working condition.
- Accurately document findings in patient electronic record and maintain confidentiality of that data.
- Participate with quality assurance, including chart review, random chart audits, and annual review of staff compliance.
- Assist in the review and update of medical policies, procedures, and services.
- Strive to improve medical services offered.
- Provide accurate education, resources, and materials related to medical services offered.
- Provide follow-up contact with patients when appropriate and possible.
- Maintain a respectful and collaborative working relationship with all staff, volunteers, board members, and Medical Director.
- Stay current on medical developments, practices, factual information, and procedures in each of our service areas.
- Respect and maintain patient and organization confidentiality at all times.
- Provide occasional backup support for incoming patient phone calls and reception duties, as needed.
- Comply with Policies and Procedures and all laws, rules, regulations, standards, and best practices appropriate to the position.
- Other duties as assigned.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Communicates as needed with Nurse Manager and Executive Director.
- Assists in training new advocates/volunteers.
- Assists Executive Director in fundraising and marketing duties as assigned.
- Represents the Clinic in the community as delegated by the Nurse Manager and Executive Director.
- When assigned, attends medical conferences that offer professional training and information pertinent to the clinic’s practices.
- Increases knowledge of obstetrical and gynecological care and women’s health issues.
- Networks with other pro-life medical professionals and attends appropriate local pro-life meetings or conferences if possible.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Agreement with our Values and Approach: Commitment to carrying out the pro-life Mission, Values and Vision of SWOW in particular: no abortion referrals, no contraceptives dispensed or advocated, chastity promoted. Must exhibit a strong commitment and dedication to the sanctity of all human life and to sexual purity. Must agree with and be willing to uphold the Mission Statement and all SWOW Policies and Procedures.
- Professional: Registered Nurse Manager (RN) with current licensure, current certification in sonography; experience in Obstetrics preferred.
- Must maintain professional liability insurance with minimum limits of $1 million/claim and $3 million aggregate.
- Exhibits strong interpersonal, organizational and communication stills, and possesses basic computer skills and knowledge.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent and/or related experience preferred, minimum of associate degree required; National Institute of Family and Life Advocates’ (NIFLA) Limited Obstetrical Ultrasound Course or equivalent, required oversight scans, and required certification courses. Preferred: experience with pregnancy resource centers, counseling, social services, family services, and/or previous non-profit education and/or experience.
- Personal: Able to empathize with those in distress and give practical assistance; strong counseling and active listening skills. The ability to navigate stairs and occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
- Relational: Ability to work as a team member and to accept responsibility. Ability to act independently and to seek consultation when needed.
TRAINING - SWOW will provide the following on an initial and on-going basis (as needed):
- Orientation to SWOW and on-the-job training with the Nurse Manager and Executive Director, Patient Services Manager, and/or Medical Director.
- Training and materials necessary to serve as a Patient Advocate, including topics listed above needed to provide factually accurate lay counseling to patients.
- Training and materials regarding all SWOW Medical Services, Extended Services, and Policies and Procedures.
- *We will provide limited ultrasound training and certification.

- SWOW (and off-site meetings or appointments, as applicable).
