About SPO
Saint Paul’s Outreach (SPO) is an exciting national nonprofit that fulfills a crucial need to support and build a more robust Catholic life on America’s college campuses. Since 1985, SPO has been working with college students and young adults from across the country.
SPO’s model is simple but effective. SPO Missionaries are trained and sent to campuses around the country where they dedicate their time as leaders of the Catholic life on campus and within SPO Households. Missionaries cultivate relationships with students, inviting them to go deeper in or learn about the Catholic faith.
By inviting students to live with our missionaries in SPO Households, we form small communities of dedicated Catholic college students who encourage each other in their faith. SPO Households provide a comprehensive, round-the-clock Catholic lifestyle through which students receive the encouragement of an ardent Catholic community and emerge stronger and more confident in their faith. Many of the college students who participate in SPO not only grow in their faith and remain serious Catholics after college, but go on to evangelize their peers in every walk of life, including many who go on to full-time service to the Church as priests, religious, SPO Missionaries, or other ministry professions.
With up to 90% of young Catholics falling away from their faith during their college years, SPO is needed more than ever. With a proven approach that reaches thousands of students annually, SPO is working to reverse this trend. We know that in order to establish a way of life for college students that will be sustained beyond college, comprehensive solutions are necessary.
SPO has seen tremendous growth in recent years. Currently, we have waitlists for a number of households and new campuses nationwide are requesting an SPO presence. SPO is a nonprofit corporation with 501(c)(3) status, governed by a Board of Directors under the ecclesiastical vigilance of the Archbishop of St. Paul and Minneapolis.
The Opportunity
SPO is seeking a Major Gift Officer in the Minnesota region to focus on growing revenue from
individual donors contributing to SPO’s annual operating fund and Faith Alive capital campaign. This
position reports to the National Director of Development and will implement and report on tactics to
achieve SPO development goals for major donors. The Major Gift officer will work with a Development
Team which includes staff specializing in communications, gift processing and a diverse group of
Regional Development directors around the country. The Major Gift Officer will ensure a strategic,
donor-centric approach to identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding individual
donors so that giving is retained and increased over time.
Success will be measured on metrics to be established annually in coordination with the National
Director, specifically targeting the following performance measures:
 Increase in number of donors giving $5000+
 Increase in total revenue from donors giving major gifts
 Retention of major donors
 Increased gift levels from retained donors
 Increased number of documented planned gifts
Areas of Responsibility / Essential Job Functions
 Donor Qualification and Cultivation – 40%
o Serve as a “ pipeline builder” with responsibilities that includes existing donors,
identifying and qualifying lapsed and new donors, qualifying approximately 150
prospects annually.
o Conduct identification of new major gifts prospects based on annual fund gift levels,
participation at events, suggestions from board members, and other prospecting
methods. This includes collaboration with Annual Fund Manager to screen new
prospects for cultivation based on capacity and interest.
o Identify donors who may be appropriate to cultivate for a planned gift.
o Involve other SPO staff and volunteers in the cultivation process as appropriate.
 Donor Solicitation – 40%
o Renew and upgrade major gifts and invite donors to consider blended gift strategies
for major gifts that include one-time donations, campaign pledges and planned gifts.
o Assist event staff in planning and implementing targeted solicitations for major gifts
and annual regional banquet gifts.
o Provide regular reports on the strategy, progress and results within the donor
o Utilize donation strategies that may include a blend of outright giving, multi-year
pledges and planned giving opportunities to best meet donors’ philanthropic
aspirations and financial capacity.
 Donor Stewardship – 10%
o Ensure that all major donors are incorporated in a stewardship plan that keeps them
informed of SPO’s news, volunteer opportunities, and giving options.
o Assist in reviewing donor lists in the Annual Report, ensuring that major donors are
accurately represented and recognized.
 Data management – 10%
o Utilize CRM (Raiser’s Edge) to track and report on donor and prospect activity
o Input detailed donor information and activity, including individual call reports, within
Raiser’s Edge. Data entry to be completed in a timely manner.
o Ensure confidentiality and proper usage of donor data, in coordination with
Development and Mission staff.
Candidate Profile
 A mission driven individual that is committed to evangelization within the Catholic church.
 At least four years of successful business/development or mission experience.
 Three years of fundraising experience is preferred.
 Must have outstanding organizational and planning skills, and top-notch verbal, written and
interpersonal communication skills.
 Must have strong initiative and ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part
of the Development Team.
 A Bachelor’s degree is required.
 Demonstrated experience in effectively developing relationships with diverse constituencies.
 Conduct business ethically and with integrity and demonstrate respect for colleagues and

management systems such as Raiser’s Edge.
