Position Description

 

Position Title: Director of Music

Date: January 2024

FLSA Status: Full-time Hourly Nonexempt

Reports to: Director of Liturgy, Pastor

Provides Work Direction to: Volunteeers

Receives Work Direction from: Director of Liturgy, Pastor

This Position is: 30 hours a week, 12 months full- time with benefits, including health, dental, and vacation and sick time according to Archdiocesan norms.

Job Purpose: To foster a dynamic and inspiring worship community through a music ministry that supports participation in the liturgical life of the parish while sustaining the quality of congregational singing. The Director of Music will support the gospel message through song and challenge the community to live it more fully.

General Responsibilities:

 

Employment in and by the Church is substantially different from secular employment. Representative Responsibilities:

  • To provide overall direction, planning, and coordination of the music programs.
  • To plan, select, and prepare music for weekend liturgies, Holy Days, Sacramental celebrations, and parish gatherings.
  • Assist in preparations for parish weddings and funerals, as needed.
  • To provide regular prep/rehearsal time for all musicians.
  • Encourage, recruit, and inspire congregational singing, enhancing the worship opportunities for the community.
  • Attend and participate in general parish team meetings, as requested.
  • Hold regular office hours as well as be a visible familiar presence on the weekends and at parish events.
  • Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends.
  • Direct for a SATB choir.
  • Maintain license for copyright and reporting usage.
  • Create worship aids for liturgies.
  • Manage and maintain the music library as well as file and pull music for various liturgical seasons.
  • Create music binders and practice files for each season.
  • Maintain the music budget.
  • Be able to communicate an annual calendar of liturgical services.

Job Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in music with an emphasis in piano, or Liturgical Music, or be in the process of completing such a degree at a college or university is ideal.
  • One or more years of experience in conducting choirs and ensembles.
  • Ability to play piano, guitar, or other instruments a plus.
  • Provide clear direction, verbal and written.
  • Possess strong organizational skills with an ability to delegate and instill the same in others.
  • Complete background check and Virtus training.
  • Proficient computer skills especially in Publisher and Finale a plus.
  • Ability to build and maintain good relationships with parish members, including flexibility and patience with both children and adult volunteers.
  • Ability to inspire, lead, and sustain the interest of choir members.
  • Knowledge of and experience of Catholic Mass.
  • Able to take direction and work as a team member.
  • Perform other duties as mutually agreed upon with Director of Liturgy and Pastor.
  • Is mission driven and a creative problem solver.
