Full-Time Alumni Counselor

Job Description

Position Overview

Alumni Counselor is a pioneering roles at Cristo Rey schools that will play a critical role in ensuring that Cristo Rey alumni are on track to enroll, persist, and graduate with a degree.  This position requires an extraordinary commitment to serving urban, low-income youth – most of whom will be the first in their family to pursue a degree – and a keen understanding of the challenges Cristo Rey alumni face as they transition to and through college and career. This position will work with our current Graduate Support Counselor to further build a web of relationships between college counseling, families, faculty, staff, university partners, and current students that facilitates completion of a degree from a 2- or 4-year college.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support CRTC alumni in college:
    • Track alumni college enrollment, retention and persistence using National Student Clearinghouse data, interactions with alumni, social media, and other relevant platforms
    • Analyze data regarding alumni progress and prepare reports
    • Create and share resources for alumni that promote college and career readiness, job placement, and career pathways
    • Identify and work with struggling alumni to assess their needs, resources, and supports
    • Support alumni enrolled in 2-year schools toward degree completion and transfer into a 4-year college
    • Support alumni in the re-enrollment processes
    • Communicate with alumni via telephone, texting, videoconference, and social media platforms
    • Conduct visits to colleges where alumni are enrolled
  • Publicize scholarships, internship and job opportunities for alumni and coordinate alumni events Develop collaborative partnerships with colleges/Universities:
    • Become familiar with college environments, culture and support systems
    • Build professional relationships with colleges to further support alumni
    • Attend orientation and registration programs as requested
    • Connect alumni with college resources and services that intervene when alumni show signs of becoming disengaged from school and/or at risk of failing a course
  • Collaborate with the College Counseling Office to ensure successful transition of seniors into college:
  • Teach college knowledge and life skill classes to current seniors
  • Assist with senior financial aid process, post high school transition, college enrollment, registration, and deflecting summer melt
  • Build positive, professional relationships with seniors and their families
  • Work with the Development office, school administration, Corporate Work Study department and school alumni in developing an alumni network for the school and wider community:
  • Provide opportunities for alumni to engage in Cristo Rey events and social media
  • Engage alumni with corporate partners to create employment pipeline
  • Connect alumni with mentorship opportunities with current students
  • Track and share data findings with all pertinent constituents including President, Board Members and the Cristo Rey Network
  • Build and manage relationships with partner college support organizations
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Additional Information

  • Some travel is required as well as the ability to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Successful applicant must have a valid driver’s license.

Job Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree required with 2-3 years of professional experience working with college admissions, college support services, college access, and/or first generation students • Bilingual (speaking, reading and writing) in Spanish preferred • Deep understanding of the personal, cultural, and systematic issues first generation, low income students face • Strong skill set in data collection, analysis, and reporting • Proficiency working with web based data management systems, Microsoft Excel, social networking tools, and social media platforms • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate and build relationships across a wide range of individuals and constituencies • Experience in working with young adults • Experience in planning events and/or leading workshops or classes • Highly organized with the ability to advance multiple projects simultaneously • Highly motivated, collaborative leader with the ability to manage a large number of professional relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders • Relentless focus on results, high level of accountability and willingness to champion the success of Cristo Rey alumni
