Purpose of Position

To provide instructional classes in all assigned subjects in accordance with the school/parish mission statements, guiding principles, philosophy, handbooks, curriculum, and directions established by the principal, president, and pastor.

We are looking for candidates, who are mission driven, attentive to results and have a strong calling to serve in a faith-filled urban school. We are offering a unique opportunity for individuals that have not been formally trained as a teacher to become a teacher and help positively transform the world! 

Find success in a new field by training on the job: 

  • One-on-one training with a Master Teacher for six weeks 
  • Receive specialized reading instruction training and become a certified Groves Academy Method reading teacher 
  • Intentional “student teaching” experience while being compensated as a full-time teacher on record
  • Support in acquiring a teaching license of advanced education to advance your career. 

General Responsibilities

Employment in and by the Church is substantially different from secular employment. Church employees must conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with and supportive of the mission and purpose of the Church. Their behavior must not violate the faith, morals or laws of the Church or the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, such that it can embarrass the Church or give rise to scandal. This position does not require the employee be a Catholic. It is expected that all employees respect Catholic doctrine and religious practices. Teachers will be required to teach adopted Catholic Religion Curriculum, which includes PCYI curriculum, leading daily prayer and supervision at mass. Reasonable accommodation for the religious practice of employees not of the Catholic faith will be provided.

Qualifications

Position qualifications: 

  • BA/BS degree
  • Successfully complete a background check
  • Ability and willingness to actively participate in faculty meetings and learning teams, practice Ascension Catholic Academy guiding principles, and work without supervision
  • Abide by all conditions of the employee handbook
  • Willingness to learn and implement new educational strategies, manage and maintain a classroom of students effectively, and take direction from the principal and assistant principal as well as effectively complete new programs, processes, and procedures as directed
  • Plan, organize, and meet expectations and deadlines
  • Ability to work effectively with adults positively and maintain collegial atmosphere in and out of the classroom
  • Keep information confidential; maintain integrity and honesty, informing supervisors and HR as appropriate

Knowledge and Skills

Candidates who are new to the teaching profession will engage in mentorship and training to build the skills below:

  • Be knowledgeable and supportive of Catholic School mission and philosophy
  • Ability and willingness to differentiate instruction and write language objectives for ELL, write learning objective centered lesson plans, and be a peacemaker
  • Exhibit competence in age-appropriate instructional methods and knowledge of subject matter being taught
  • Demonstrate evidence of good classroom management techniques
  • Work in a goal and growth oriented school. Engage in observation feedback conversations, goal-setting, and student data analysis.  
  • Proficiency in technology skills as the position demands, including but not limited to the Internet, Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, and grading program
  • Continual growth in instructional knowledge and skills to stay abreast of current and emerging practices
  • Communicate effectively with parents, faculty/staff, administrators, and the parish community

Physical Requirements

  • Able to work 40 + hours per week
  • Fulfill total commitments of the educational program and other activities of the school year
  • Able to attend school-related activities deemed necessary by the principal.
  • Able to move around a room for long periods of time
  • Able to speak, see, hear, and respond to students, co-workers, supervisor, etc. at all times
  • Lift and carry up to 30 pounds using proper lifting and carrying techniques
  • Ability to climb stairs
