Description
The Middle School Learning Specialist is a dedicated educator who provides targeted academic support, instructional strategies, and advocacy for students with diverse learning needs. This role focuses on helping students in grades 6-8 succeed in the general education curriculum through small group support in executive functioning, facilitating accommodations, and collaboration with teachers, families, and support staff. The Learning Specialist promotes an inclusive learning environment and supports teachers with strategies for neurodiverse learners.
This position works in collaboration with the Director of Learning Support. Responsibilities to BSM as a Catholic School:
Except in the teaching of religion, it is not an essential prerequisite that all employees be Catholic. However, all employees are expected to respect the teaching of the Church. Instruction & Student Support
● Teach study skills, executive functioning strategies, time management, note-taking, and test-taking techniques.
● Collaborate with teachers, parents, and admin to provide accommodations to students, including reading tests aloud during prep periods.
Collaboration & Consultation
● Work closely with general education teachers, counselors, administrators, and related service providers.
● Participate in Student Support Team (SST) and parent meetings.
● Communicate regularly with parents/guardians about student progress and strategies for home support.
Classroom Duties
● Teach classes as assigned by the principal
● Give evidence of adequate preparation, have lesson plans created and available to be provided to substitute when needed.
● Tailor pacing to student needs
● Employ a variety of techniques to motivate and meet different learning styles, including the use of technology when appropriate
● Demonstrate control of classroom dynamics
● Enforce the rules and expectations for students found in the BSM student handbook
● Incorporate appropriate elements of the current strategic plan.
Professional Responsibilities
● Maintain licensure and continue education in content and methods
● Attend required meetings and events
● Chaperone or supervision duties as assigned
● Keep accurate records and complete in a timely manner
● Respond timely, respectfully and effectively with parents, teachers, staff, administration, visitors and volunteers.
● Support and facilitate the initiatives of the current BSM strategic plan
● Other duties as assigned by the principal
Qualifications
Education / Experience (Minimum Required)
- Bachelors degree or above-related field
- Minnesota teachers license or ability to obtain license under direction of
- Minnesota Special Education License - preferred
