Description
Coordinate the church liturgical environment per Pastor’s direction.
Part-time approximately 5- 8 hours per week, regular liturgical season and 15+ hours per week Christmas and Easter liturgical season. Not benefit eligible.
ENVIRONMENT DUTIES:
- Coordinate and maintain the church’s liturgical environment in alignment with the liturgical calendar and Pastor’s direction
- Change altar cloths and church banners to reflect liturgical seasons and special occasions
- Design and implement floral arrangements that enhance the sacred space, including seasonal décor and regular upkeep
- Lead extensive preparations for Christmas and Easter seasons, including lighting, floral displays, banners, decorations, crosses, and spatial arrangements throughout the church
- Assist with special liturgical occasions requiring environmental changes, such as baptisms, funerals, and feast days
- Manage physical setup for Holy Week liturgies, including the altar of repose for Holy Thursday and other worship spaces as needed
- Attend planning meetings in advance of major liturgical seasons to ensure timely and coordinated setup
- Maintain and clean liturgical furnishings such as candlesticks, Baldacchino, Monstrance, Humeral Veil, Holy Water fonts, and Baptismal font (including post-baptism cleaning and repositioning)
- Track inventory and request orders for votive and liturgical candles; replace burned-out candles regularly (several times each week)
- Ensure all liturgical elements are clean, orderly, well-maintained, and appropriately placed
- Organize and maintain church-adjacent spaces such as narthex and gathering space with respect to liturgical and church-related materials
- Regularly check pew orderliness of materials (remove extraneous materials)
- Coordinate with appropriate parish staff regarding larger projects or requested changes
- Maintain confidentiality about parish, staff, and Pastor’s business
- Demonstrate both creativity and organization in crafting beautiful, reverent, and liturgically appropriate worship environments
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in catholic studies, religious, liturgy or related field preferred
Experience in preparing liturgies in the Catholic Church
Experience in visual/spatial design, with examples or portfolio
Demonstrated knowledge of Catholic liturgy and Archdiocesan policies
Pass Archdiocesan background checks and complete VIRTUS
Commitment to the mission of St. John the Evangelist Church and School
Proficiently operate a computer, printer and other office equipment
Enthusiastic leader with a positive attitude
