Position Title: Director of Music and Liturgy

Reports to: Pastor

FLSA: Exempt (Learned Professional)

# of Direct Reports: 1 Organist

Employment Status: Full-Time with Parish-Offered Benefits

JOB PURPOSE:

Under the supervision of the Pastor, the Director of Music and Liturgy will collaborate in the planning and implementation of Parish Liturgical events and be responsible for providing guidance and direction to the liturgical music program of the parish.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide musical and liturgical leadership for the parish.

Employment in and by the Church is substantially different from secular employment.  Church employees must conduct themselves in a manner which is consistent and supportive of the mission and purpose of the Church. REPRESENTATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with the planning and implementation of the liturgical life of the Parish.
  • Coordinate and conduct choirs, cantors, and instrumentalists.
  • Plan music for liturgical celebrations.
  • Enhance the liturgical and musical life of the community.

ESSENTIAL MUSIC FUNCTIONS:

  1. Plan music and musicians for all parish liturgies, including weekend Masses, Holy Days, and sacramental celebrations.
  2. Conduct, accompany, and sing as required, ensuring replacement musicians are secured when necessary.
  3. Serve as the primary parish accompanist, playing piano and/or organ for weekend Masses, Holy Days, and sacramental celebrations.
  4. Supervise and collaborate with the assistant organist.
  5. Oversee Audio & Visual Equipment Technician, acting as the primary contact and supervisor for audio/visual technology needs.
  6. Recruit, train, and lead musical ensembles, including children's choir, adult choir, small ensemble, instrumentalists, and cantors.
  7. Maintain regular communication with volunteers.
  8. Assist in music planning for weddings and funerals and serve as the primary cantor and accompanists, as necessary.
  9. Compose and arrange music for parish liturgies.
  10. Coordinate maintenance of parish musical instruments, sound equipment, and related technology.
  11. Prepare projection files and other materials for liturgies.
  12. Manage copyright permissions and maintain the music library.
  13. Assist in coordinating A/V equipment maintenance.
  14. Educate the parish community on liturgical music.
  15. Organize concerts and musical prayer services to enrich the community's musical life.
  16. Schedule parish facilities as per established procedures.
  17. Participate in all staff gatherings and offer assistance to other staff members when possible.
  18. Manage the music budget effectively.
  19. Provide music scores for all liturgical participants.
  20. Arrange and compose music as necessary to facilitate volunteer participation.
  21. Function as the primary liaison with other musical groups using parish facilities.
  22. Oversee musical activities and events at the parish.

ESSENTIAL LITURGY FUNCTIONS:

Work closely with the Pastor to

  1. Plan and coordinate all weekly and seasonal liturgical celebrations in accordance with the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM).
  2. Provide leadership, supervision, and formation to liturgical volunteers.
  3. Manage communication, training, scheduling, and recruitment of liturgical volunteers.
  4. Facilitate gathering and formation opportunities for liturgical ministers.
  5. Support ASL interpreters, including scheduling and script preparation.
  6. Ensure proper preparation of worship space and oversee environment volunteers.
  7. Coordinate parish announcements and extra-liturgical events during Mass.
  8. Plan liturgical services for funerals, weddings, anointing, and other events.
  9. Coordinate liturgies sponsored by parish groups.
  10. Manage liturgical supplies and inventory.
  11. Oversee the liturgy budget.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate will possess significant liturgical and musical training, including choral conducting, vocal performance, and keyboard proficiency (piano and/or organ). Possess a strong knowledge of and be proficient in the management, operation and maintenance of audio visual and associated communications and electronic systems.  Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills are essential. The role requires a flexible schedule, including availability on evenings, Sundays, weekends, and Holy Days.

MENTAL DEMANDS:

Candidates must be initiative-taking, organized, and adaptable, capable of multitasking and prioritizing workload to meet parishioner needs. Patience and effective communication with volunteers are crucial.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The position involves approximately 75% computer work, as well as standing, walking, lifting up to 40 lbs., and moving furniture.
