Job Description

JOB SUMMARY: As a small, Catholic religious community of men, we are looking for an experienced and dedicated part-time cook to prepare the main meal for 5 days per week. If you have a passion for planning and preparing family-style meals, with a variety of healthy cuisines, under a resident liaison-supervisor, please submit an application to us today.

WORK SCHEDULE: The cook will work 4 hours per day Monday through Friday, 3:00-7:00 p.m. Total = 20 hours per week.

a. Plan nutritious menu and add needed items to shopping list with liaison-supervisor each week, which are to be posted in kitchen. Attention must be given to a balanced diet, special needs diets, and a creative mix of cuisines.
b. Prepare the meal on-site in our kitchen for the number who will be dining, according to the Sign-In list posted in the kitchen. Counting residents and occasional guests, the average number is between 8 – 12 persons.
c. Clean and set the table according to the number who will dine.
d. Serve the meal at 6:00 p.m.
e. Properly store unused and leftover food items at appropriate temperatures, after marking with description and date.
f. Wash all pots, pans, coffee machines, serving dishes and utensils; and load appropriate items in dishwasher and start it before leaving.
g. Ensure that the dining room and kitchen counters, tables and floors are cleaned at the end of your shift.
h. Assist in maintaining and rotating a healthy shelf-life of food stock and ingredients in the cabinets, refrigerators, freezers, storage areas.
i. In case of absence due to illness or emergency, notify liaison-supervisor well in advance of scheduled work day, at latest by 11:00 a.m.

SALARY: The cook will be paid by the hour, twice a month. Raises will be considered after six months and thereafter on July 1st of each year. Raises will be based on performance, tenure and cost of living. The starting date for this position is May 1, 2019, beginning as a 3-month trial period before the contract is made permanent. The salary range is between $15,000 - $20,000.

ACCOUNTABILITY: The cook is accountable to the liaison-supervisor. Questions and difficulties are to be directed to him, and he in turn serves as a liaison to and from the Dominican community on all matters. The planning of menus and items needed for grocery shopping will take place weekly between cook and liaison-supervisor. The cook and liaison-supervisor will meet periodically for performance review and discuss concerns and needs of the cook and/or Dominican community.

Job Qualifications

a. Able to read English and follow standardized recipes.
b. Knowledge and experience of safe and proper food handling procedures.
c. Significant experience as a cook and proper management of a kitchen.
d. Knowledge and experience of preparing a variety of healthy cuisines.
e. Able to work with a liaison-supervisor for a small group of religious men.

Institution Description

We are Friars of the Order of Preachers, commonly known as the Dominicans, a Catholic religious order founded in 1216 by St. Dominic de Guzman to preach the Good News of Jesus Christ. In Minneapolis, we are 9 men living at St. Albert the Great Priory, 2833 32nd Avenue South, Minneapolis MN 55406, which is only one block off of east Lake Street and 33rd Avenue South. There is adequate parking available. There is a Metro Transit bus stop at Lake Street and 33rd Avenue, and the nearest Metro train is on the blue line at the Lake Street/Midtown stop, only 7 blocks away. Attached to St. Albert the Great church is the Priory, the residence for Dominicans, where the cook will work in a well- equipped kitchen, with moderate-size dining room.
